Vim Tutorial Videos

I’ve been doing some video tutorials that are hosted on vimeo for a little while now and they’ve reached a decent critical mass. However, they aren’t all that well organized – not that vimeo doesn’t give you a decent way to organize them, it’s just that I’m incredibly cheap and you need to pay an upgrade fee to get an unlimited number of albums. So I organize them a bit better here. Check the child pages to see what videos are available.

    YOU, SIR, SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF!!!
    …for upon learning the vim way, I ventured into the world of vimrc files, github vim plugins and such – only to find hordes of heathens! Those who sough to turn my minimalistic keystroke laiden youthful and aspiring vim intellect into….into….a windows GUI with dropdown menus and all! Horrific plugins that sought to pull me into an Eclipse wannabe!

    YOU SHOULD FOREWARN YOUR DISCIPLES of what lies ahead! I was mauled by heretics. (I’m now rocking back and forth in the corner of my room mumbling, “vim.” And it might be days before I come outside again.)

    I follow your instructions
    To install it, do the following:

    Wipe out your ~/.vimrc file and ~/.vim directory (back up if you wish)
    git clone https://github.com/derekwyatt/vim-config.git ~/.vim
    cd ~/.vim/bundle && ./get
    ln ~/.vim/vimrc ~/.vimrc
    Start Vim

    But after I start vim I start vim, I’m getting this error.

    Hmm… I’m not sure I can provide a lot of help here except suggest an approach. Try checking ‘:messages’ just to see if it’s more enlightening. After that, go through the vimrc. Comment nearly the whole thing out except for the top pathogen stuff. If that doesn’t get rid of it, then start deleting packages from the bundle directory until it goes away.

    I can’t get rid of the error, but I installed gvim after reading here

    Hi Derek,

    I update the system and reinstall your config like 5 times and the terminal don’t show the error anymore but the colorschemes are slightly different, for example the background in the railscast theme with vim is slightly darker than in gvim.

    I add to the .bashrc file export TERM=”xterm-256color”
    then to the .vimrc this set t_Co=256
    vim is working fine now but I have problem with the navajo-night colorscheme. In gvim the dark blue is working fine but in vim I’m getting a dark grey background with navajo-night. With others colorscheme the colors are identical. Any thought?

    You’re never going to get a terminal to look the same as a full fledged GUI. The GUI is just more capable in this area. I wouldn’t spend much effort trying to make them look the same, or you might lose your mind :)
